Sponsored by CAL DensityTM
1. Twenty horses randomly divided into two groups of 10 to participate in experiment to determine the effect of an organic source of calcium (OrganiCALTM) on bone density in growing thoroughbred horses. The trial period can be 75-, 90- or 120-days.
2. The treated group will be fed CAL DensityTM, CAL PelletsTM or CAL Pellets PlusTM daily at maximum strength and control group will be fed a placebo daily.
3. Both groups will be managed exactly the same i.e.: turnout, veterinary care, forages and management protocol. Farm is to work directly under the supervision of Dr. Amy Gill, an equine nutritionist. Dr. Gill is an independent contractor paid to conduct these studies.
4. One PT-11 Aluminum Step wedge Penetrometer will be required to determine Radiographic Bone aluminum Equivalence of each horse - $125
5. A veterinarian with a Digital Radiograph Machine will take radiographs of the left cannon bone using aluminum step wedge at days 0-30-60-90, 0-25-50-75 or 0-30-60-90-120.
6. University staff and students will be used to collate and subject data to statistical testing.
7. Optional – blood sampling may also be performed to determine activity of bone markers involved in mineralization and demineralization of bone.
TOTAL COST TO CONDUCT THE 90-DAY TRIAL AT YOUR FARM:
1. Cal Density $8,400 (Blood Sampling is an additional $4,000)
2. CAL Pellets $5,300 (Blood Sampling is an additional $4,000)
3. CAL Pellets Plus $6,700 (Blood Sampling is an additional $4,000)
* A 10% BONE DENSITY INCREASE IS GUARANTEED OR WE PAY FOR THE ENTIRE PROJECT. THE WEST TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY STUDY WHERE 14% BONE DENSITY INCREASED IN THE INITIAL 60 DAYS OF THE 120-DAY TRIAL ALSO SHOWS A 97% DUPLICATION OF RESULTS WILL BE ACHIEVED WHEN THE TRIALS ARE PERFORMED IN THE SAME MANNER.*
